Where Are All The Mediums?
I typed out this post title about 6 times. Where are all the medium sized girls? I used the word medium because I couldn't come up with another word.
Normal? No, normal is not the right word, we are all normal.
Big Girls? Big girls is 100% not the right word either. Bigger is offensive, no one wants to be labeled as a big girl.
Curvy girls? That isn't it either. I know size 2 girls that have beautiful curves. The female body is curved, the world is not flat. Curvy (in my opinion) is actually a negative word that we have somehow revamped to mean sexy, but the underlying thing you're implying is not skinny. And I mean WE --- WOMEN --- have revamped that word. We have turned the word curvy, into a term that is used as a positive description for girls over the size of 8.
I'm not thin. I'm not a 0-6. I'm also not plus size. I'm not a 14-20. I've mentioned before that I have serious self-perception issues, and I think it has just occurred to me why. There is no one like me (or you or you or you or you or you or you) putting themselves out there. There are thin celebrities, there are plus sized celebrities. And the thing that really sparked this whole realization for me... there are thin fashion bloggers and there are plus sized fashion bloggers.
Where on earth are the size 8-12s? Why are there no fashion blogs for this size? And furthermore, what are we called? We aren't small, we aren't x-large... what are we? Are we mediums? Are we larges? Are we marges?
I was telling Helene yesterday that it feels like there is an odd scale of confidence among women in the fashion blogging world ....
0-6 = confident
8-12 = they don't exist, because they are self-conscious and apparently hiding
14-20 = confident
What is wrong with all of us in the middle? Where are we? Why can't/don't we feel as good about ourselves and our bodies as everyone else does?
Maybe it is because of the guides that show "swimsuits to flatter every body type". I click them every single time, as if I'm going to be presented with leggings and a long sweater in bikini form. Instead I'm greeted by a size 4 with big boobs, a size 0 with with small boobs, a size 6 with a perfect "big booty" as they call it and a size 16.
Ok well, what do I wear? First of all, I should offer a quick disclaimer, no bathing suit "flatters" my body type, unless the bathing suit is somehow a fit and flare knee-length sundress. If you have my "body type", whatever type that is, a bathing suit is simply a torture device that makes you cry and hate pool party invites.
*declines pool party invitation. host asks, "what, you don't like swimming?" I love swimming, I don't want to be in a bathing suit standing next to the size 6 with the "big booty". thanks.*
I want someone to recommend a pair of shorts that don't make me pull them off immediately, or someone to recommend a pair of ripped denim that is not boyfriend style. But most of all, I just want what every other size has, and that's a recommendation for flattering, fashionable items that look good on the medium body type.
Is that too much to ask? So where are you mediums?? Come out and play, inspire our size group to walk with confidence, inspire others our size to start their own fashion blogs, and most importantly, let me click all your affiliate links!
And please, if there is a fashion blog run by a medium, please leave their link in the comments section below!!
