It has recently come to my attention that I am horribly concerned with how much random jobs in the sports industry pay. Why do I care what the beer man makes? I'm not sure, maybe I can beer man one day. The key to career success is to always have several options on the table, should an opportunity present itself. Who knows, maybe the beer man gig comes with free beer, let's find out!
1. MLB Umpire
2. NFL Cheerleader
Ouch. but for the record, I'd still want to be a DCC!!
3. Beer Man
4. Professional Mascot
I'm not entirely sure if that's a banana in his pocket or if he is just excited to be making $25k a year?
5. Minor League Baseball Player
Woof.
6. Golf Superintendent (groundskeeper)
7. Major League Soccer Owner (what is the team worth?)
8. vs.... NFL Owner (what is the team worth?)
9. NBA Stadium Announcer
10. NCAA Offensive Line COACH
11. How much did Rory McIlroy make for winning the PGA Championship (4 days of work)
So what sports job would you be curious to learn how much moolah they make? Leave me a comment and I can put together a second post down the road with your answers! Or, maybe I'm the only nosey weirdo around these parts!

this is awesome and really interesting! So my friends bro is in the minor league, i'ts true they don't make much BUT he also got a pretty hefty signing bonus (which apparently most of them do) and he gets a free place to live for the year!
ReplyDeleteA friend of a friend recently became a RedSkins cheerleader and she makes like peanuts and gets a pair of tickets to a home games...which is dumb, because she can't use them, as she'll be working the game. But she loves dancing, so that's why she does it. And it's a little prestigious. Before the Redskins, she was a cheerleader for minor league basketball (I did not know that was a thing), so...upgrade?
ReplyDeleteHaha, I hope my little bro knows how little he'll be making if he starts in the minor leagues.
ReplyDeleteSoI always thought it would be cook to be a Union Rep for the NFL Players Association or the NHL ( yea know WTF) but hey it incorporates many loves at the same time. great info but hey where's the hockey stats.... thoguht we were converting you
ReplyDeleteI think this is a great idea! Taking it a little bit away from sports for a second - I read before that one of (many) reasons women tend to get paid less is that they're less likely to negotiate and less likely to discuss money. Therefore they're not as aware of pay discrepancies. So even though it's taboo, talking money is important! Not just career stuff, but to get an idea of the relative value of everything.
ReplyDeleteAnyway - cheerleaders make less than $1,000 for the ENTIRE SEASON?! Did I read that right? How can they even afford to do that?
Most NFL cheerleaders are REQUIRED to either be a full-time student or have a full-time job. So they aren't in for the money, just for the love of it I guess! :)
DeleteThey also get paid to do appearances, too! I think they also make $$ off a calendar ....at least that's how it works for the Carolina Panthers cheerleaders!
DeleteLooks like I should try and pick back up golf huh? Hahaah!
ReplyDeleteHoly cow! It's insane when you see it laid out like that.
ReplyDeleteI'm a little surprised at the NBA stadium announcer. $100/game? Ouch.
And those minor league guys all better have some trust funds backing them! Yikes.
My friends husband is going to school to be a golf pro/administrator. Now I know why! Bookoo bucks.
ReplyDeleteRecently started following you and so glad I did. This is interesting! (Huge Cincinnati Bengals fan here though!!) Lol
ReplyDeleteInteresting post! I'm mildly obsessed with wondering how much people make too.
ReplyDeleteMy dad is a little league umpire and loves it. I need to show him this!
Loved this post! I'm so nosey too! Can't believe the DCC make sooooo little. I'm a die-hard eagles fan, but DVR Making the Team! haha, don't tell my friends!
ReplyDeleteWow, this is really interesting to see!
ReplyDeleteOk, so an announcer and cheerleader are the most offensive... seriously, that's ridiculous how little they get paid! They're part of the entertainment... crazyy!
ReplyDeletethat is absolutely insane how some of the jobs are hardly any pay at all. the dallas cowboys cheerleaders definitely have it a little rough; I did know that they didn't get a lot of pay from watching the show on CMT.
ReplyDeleteI've always wanted to be a DCC, but alas the small boobs would probably have that blonde and brown haired lady laugh at me. Also, I'm pretty sure my skinny body is still not skinny enough for them. They should get paid more, though. They put in a lot of hard work!
ReplyDeleteIf I could look that good in a Dallas Cowboy Cheerleading outfit, that would be more than enough earnings for me. And my husband and I were just talking about minor league salaries the other day...#ouch.
ReplyDeleteHow is it the cheerleaders are the most underpaid? Most people for for the DCC.
ReplyDeletethis is way really interesting to see.
ReplyDeleteSome of them are more than what I thought. Getting to be a MLB umpire is pretty tough. We have a few umps in single A that have been doing it for a while. The players I don't feel that bad for because they get a nice signing bonus over consistent pay every week.
ReplyDeleteI had no idea that being an NFL Cheerleader wasn't a full time job, I assumed they didn't make as much as the players, but they have to practice a lot and go to a bunch of events so I thought they made closer to a real salary during the season.
ReplyDeleteWhat bothers me most about pay for cheerleaders in the League is that they are completely and utterly exploited. I know that's weird to say since they sign up for these gigs, but when you consider the revenue they bring into these franchises with appearance fees, calendars, etc., it's ridiculous.
ReplyDeleteAnd, in many cases, illegal. Most of these women don't even make minimum wage. The whole situation with the Raiders has been really fascinating from an employment law standpoint.
Wow...just Wow. I really just cant think of anything else to say?! LoL Some of these are mind-boggling!
ReplyDeleteI get super annoyed at the lack of income professional cheerleaders/dancers make. I was a professional cheerleader right after college and my salary was a joke. I don't think it needs to be a full time salary at all but at I actually spent more money (on makeup, hair, etc) than I ever made.
ReplyDeleteDamn, I didn't realize cheerleaders didn't make that much. Poor girls! This was super interesting to read. I'd love to know how much a soccer ref get's paid and the lines men. But look at the MLS vs the PL? Thanks for the fun, random ass knowledge! xoxo, ganeeban
ReplyDeleteOh yeah, there are definitely some jobs in the sports world that make sooo much! I had a friend who was a Patriots cheerleader, and yeah, they make jack shit!
ReplyDeleteWow that's crazy! Good to know. Any specific site your used to find out salaries?
ReplyDeleteThe NBA announcers only make a hundred bucks a game?? Ouch!
ReplyDeleteI'm curious about the guys that run the scoreboard during the games.
Some of those wages are both higher and lower than I thought!
ReplyDeleteI know a girl who's one of the Gold Rush girls for the Niners this year -- not sure how much she makes, but apparently when they played at Candlestick, each girl got 2 season tickets as part of her compensation. New stadium = nada, but a tiny bump in pay.
ReplyDeleteOther jobs I'd be interested in knowing the salaries...
Baseball/football broadcasters (the play-by-play and color guys) -- the local announcers like Vin Scully vs. the national guys like Joe Buck (blech)
And, I don't know if this is really a job, but the people who come up with the crazy stats they talk about during games, like "He's the 3rd lefty who was born in July to homer in back-to-back games."
These are unreal.. especially the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders... I can see why this is interesting..

I can tell you what the Olympic Sports Video Coordinator for a very decorated university and replay technician at NCAA football games makes. I may or may not be married to this guy. And he may or may not be providing the guys in charge of the NCAA playoff selections with all the football video they need this year.
ReplyDeleteTurf grasses management is a very serious field that pays the big bucks for sure. I know tons of people who majored in it so that they could make the big money.
ReplyDeleteI am always curious about how much different jobs pay. The cheerleader thing always shocks me, I knew a few girls who were "Buffalo Jills" and they have to buy their outfits and actually spend more money then they made. Crazyness!
ReplyDeleteSurprised the MLB umpires make so much, and they don't even work all year, and they make the worst calls.
ReplyDeleteAn NBA announcer has to make more than $100 a game...although most NBA announcers aren't even worth being paid even that much so I'm not going to argue that they need to be paid more.
Always been curious as well how much the beer guy makes.
I'd be interested to know what
I know everyone is outraged by how little the cheerleaders make, but can we talk about how much the professional mascots make. They're better paid than I am! If that's not proof I need a new job, I don't know what is. What could they possibly be required to do that they deserve to be paid $30 thousand? Thanks for making me hate my job even more. Just kidding, I really loved this post, probably because I'm super nosey. I'd be interested to know what a tennis ball boy is paid
ReplyDeleteHave you heard that their asking performers (like Katy Perry/Rihanna/Coldplay) to "bid" or pay to perform in the 2015 Super Bowl? Crazy!
ReplyDeleteYeah some people get way too much money I know our pollies earn a shit load of money and have no idea how bloody hard it is to get by on the average income which is not $64,000 a year but more like $30,000 a year, yeah the pollies seem to think it is twice what it is they are living in lala land
ReplyDeleteThis is so interesting--those poor cheerleaders!
ReplyDeleteThe DCC show on CMT is one of my guilty pleasures!
ReplyDeleteFor a while, I really thought about taking a year off of life and just moving to NYC to try to become a peanut/beer/whatever sales person at Yankee stadium. I never did and wish I had.
ReplyDeleteWow the DCC only make that much?! And to think so many of us wanted to be them growing up lol

Hi, long time reader here. Thought I should leave my first comment because I love this post! I have been a beer girl for a while and actually worked with the man you have pictured at MN Vikings and MN Wild games. Your numbers are pretty accurate for MLB games but at NFL games we average closer to $350-$400 a game. Not bad for a part time gig where we get to watch the games as well.
ReplyDeleteApparently I need to up my golf game, win a few tournaments, and retire.
ReplyDeleteWOW.. some of those are super shocking! I can't imagine only make 750 a season! I mean, these girls must just love all of that attention....?
ReplyDeleteThese are shocking - some are so high and some are so low!
