If you played sports as a kid, you probably know this sound & feeling...
Venus launches a three pointer for the win...........
The crowd's hands go up...
ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
awwwwww
Venus misses. Team loses.
I know those are different sports, but I liked the picture and this is MY BLOG. I do what I want!
That ahhhhawww sound has to be the worst sound in the world to hear if you are an athlete.
Well, let me tell you a little story about a boy named Yu. Yu Darvish to be exact.
So as not to get him confused with the other Yu's you may know.
Yu is like a totally important pitcher for the Texas Rangers.
Well little Yu was the starting pitcher in last night's matchup at the Houston Astros.
Before I get into that, let me tell you another story about a perfect game.
Definition: A perfect game
A game in which a pitcher, or combination of pitchers, pitches a victory that lasts a minimum of 9 innings and in which no opposing player reaches base.
No hits, no walks, no hit baseman. No one makes it past the batters box.
This has only occurred 23 -- yes just 23 -- times in Major League Baseball HISTORY
Ok so back to my little boy Yu.
Yu went into the very last inning of the game last night with a perfect freaking game on his hands.
He had gone 8 innings, with 14 strikeouts.
Here we are, bottom of the 9th inning.
First batter up to face Yu, hits the ball, but he is OUT at first base.
Second batter up to face Yu, hits the ball, but he is thrown OUT at first base.
One. Freaking. Out. separates Yu and the 24th perfect game in the history of baseball.
Crowd is on their feet (well most of them since it was a Houston Astros home game)
First pitch, is a hit right at the pitcher. Easy ground out.......
BUT IT GOES THROUGH HIS LEGS!!!!
Our hearts are breaking for you... er.... Yu.
No one ever pays me in gum.
It is definitely one of the worst sounds. And when you are a fan and participating in that letdown, it definitely sucks haha.
ReplyDeleteWith the teams I root for, I feel like I participate in that sound daily.
DeleteVeeVee, it's all my fault! With two left, Glenn asked me, "Is he gonna do it?" And I have a 5th sense about these things (obviously, I'm Karen a la Mean Girlies) and I said, "Nope, he's not." Well damnitall... Stupid psychic abilities!
ReplyDeleteHow could YOU do that to YU????????? Yu is gonna be sorry you did that to Yu.
DeleteI was going to make my own comment, but this convo is just too funny.
Deletethis was such a heartbreaker. i was sad. sooooo freakin close.
ReplyDeleteconfssion time: I didn't watch it. I was in bed at 9:30. I'm glad I didn't though because I would have probably woken up with an ulcer or some other panic stress related health problem.
DeleteIf anything, it means good things to come for your rotation this year!
ReplyDeleteSincerely, someone hating you as a Yankee fan. ( because the yankees are going to blow this year)
jk
kind of
Totally agree with you, it is kind of like being sad that I am only getting 75% off the shirt I have been dying to buy rather than 80% I thought I was going to get. Yu had the right responses to the media, he said a win is a win, but you know he had to have been thinking, "Dang it dang it dang it!!"
DeleteBig game tonight for your Yanks!!! No matter which team you love, a Red Sox vs Yankees matchup is always a fun one to watch!
Oh gosh-- it was so heartbreaking to watch! My husband is still depressed about it today.
ReplyDeleteIf I were Yu, I would be on the phone crying to my momma all day, I'd be that sad.... then I'd call in sick to work, but I guess he can't really do that.
DeleteI live in MN and #4 making an appearance here was... interesting. Also, I participate in the yelling even when I'm not at the stadium. My dogs think I'm a nutjob.
ReplyDeletehahahahaha OMG now I know what all my Texas friends were talking about. Gotta kinda love the irony though? no?
ReplyDeleteYou are so right about that noise!! It's the most disheartening thing in the world.
ReplyDeleteI felt so bad for Yu when I saw all the sportscenter updates on my phone.
It is the worst sound, I kind of like feeling united though, ha.
ReplyDeleteI saw this on Sportscenter, poor guy, he seemed to handle it well by smiling. I would have looked like your pup :)
Have a great day!
